Harvey Ellis was an American architect, perspective renderer, painter, and furniture designer whose work had a significant influence on the American Arts & Crafts movement. During his career, he worked in a number of cities, including Rochester, Utica, Saint Paul, Minneapolis, Saint Joseph, St. Louis, and Syracuse.
Harvey Ellis was born in Rochester in 1852 and died in Syracuse in January 1904. Despite his relatively short life, Ellis left a lasting impact as an architect, renderer, painter, and furniture designer, becoming one of the most influential artistic figures associated with the American Arts & Crafts movement.
Ellis is especially remembered for his brief but highly influential association with Gustav Stickley, where his refined artistic sensibility helped shape some of the most celebrated furniture designs of the early Craftsman period.
