Early Gustav Stickley Sideboard (Circa 1901-1903)
This sideboard, marked with the 1902-1903 decal, showcases characteristics of Stickley’s earliest furniture designs, with some experimental features that highlight its unique origin. Notably, this piece could have been crafted as early as 1901.
Key Features:
Stabilizing Spline: The sideboard features a large spline, measuring 2 3/4 inches tall by 1 1/4 inches wide, positioned in the top edge of each side. This design element was employed to counteract the movement caused by environmental changes, ensuring enhanced stability.
Hand-Wrought Iron Hardware: The iron hardware on this piece is hand-wrought, predating Stickley’s establishment of his own metal shop. The origin of this hardware remains unknown but could possibly have been acquired during one of Stickley’s trips to England.
